Eremo della Giubiliana History
A historic place dominating the Mediterranean, immersed in the unspoilt countryside south of Ragusa, among carob woods and dry stone walls, the Eremo della Giubiliana is a charming hotel where you can fully perceive the ancient charm of the island.
The estate was once part of the 12th century ecclesiastical feud of Renna, a former Arab farmhouse (Rendet gebuni) of which it constituted a sort of fortified baglio in a strategic position overlooking the sea, in defense of the numerous raids by Barbary pirates that from the end of 1400 raged in the Mediterranean Sea. As documented by recent restorations in the early 1500s, the convent structures were used by the Knights of the Order of St. John, at the time being transferred to nearby Malta. In 1700 the Hermitage was bought by the Nicosi family belonging to the aristocracy of the plateau and it is precisely the last heir of the Nicosi, Vincenza Jolanda, to have decided the restoration and open the complex to the hospitality thus creating the only hotel five luxury stars of the Val di Noto.
The Eremo della Giubiliana has 13 rooms and 6 suites, created from the ancient cells of the friars, furnished with family furnishings and antique Sicilian furniture, precious sofas and fine fabrics. The rooms, with a strong traditional Sicilian style, are equipped with every comfort, flat-screen satellite TV, air conditioning and private bathroom.
The Classic and Superior rooms overlook the vegetable garden, a garden with numerous aromatic and Mediterranean herbs, olive trees and an ancient Arab fountain; each characterized in particular, with wrought iron beds and original floors. The Deluxe rooms are located in the east wing and in the other two Deluxe rooms on the first floor there is a private terrace and a bathroom with Jacuzzi.
In the large hall of the ancient Refectory of the Knights of the Order of San Giovanni is the restaurant of the "Don Eusebio" structure where large windows overlook the park of ancient olive trees. A large fratino table, antique chests and paintings from the 17th century Sicilian School furnish visitors on a journey through time and cuisine based on tradition and local products. The best Sicilian wines can be tasted directly in the old cellar, to complete a food and wine tour that embraces the entire culture of the Iblea aristocracy.
The Eremo della Giubiliana offers a wide range of services including two runways for private aircraft landing, with no landing fee, a swimming pool and a private swimming pool about ten miles away for those who want relax and enjoy the Sicilian sun.
