Castel Fragsburg History
It is the hotel that boasts absolutely one of the most appreciated views of the whole of northern Italy. Located halfway up a sunny hill overlooking the city, it looks like a quaint brick and wood chalet, set within a park of ten hectares full of old trees. Only the turret with its graceful oriels betrays its original function as a hunting lodge, for centuries a privileged meeting place for the aristocratic lords of the adjacent castle.
It was built by the Counts von Memmingen in 1620, which succeeded the Deuster accounts in 1904. The latter is responsible for the transformation of the building according to the parameters of the Art Nouveau style, which still characterize some interiors, including the veranda of the dining room with biedermeier furniture. Classic furnishings, wood paneling, soft lighting and the atmosphere of a stately home from another era, adorned with hunting trophies and sober decors: these are the characteristics of the rooms and bedrooms, equipped with a living room with large panoramic windows.
Renate and Alexander Ortner, the owners of the hotel, take care of every detail of the service, even the gastronomic elaboration of the dishes, all inspired by local and Italian traditions. The wines are mostly regional and include those made from the property's own vineyards. along the road that leads to the center of Merano. On request, wine tastings are organized. In the park, equipped with solarium, there is a heated swimming pool. A nice note of color: the staff wears the typical South Tyrolean costume.
