Immersed in the green of the Collio, the Formentini castle near Gorizia, is known for its magnificent medieval dinners and for being one of the favorite locations for celebrating events and weddings.
Castello Formentini History
Already inhabited in prehistoric times, the territory of the Collio was in the following Roman era the seat of an outpost. The castle that was built to defend the town of San Floriano, forming part of a large imperial defensive system that had as its cornerstones Gradisca, Gorizia and continued with the fortresses of Quisca, Castel Dobra and San Martino is mentioned in a first document of 1170. In 1520 the castle was bought by Vinciguerra Formentini of Civoli which until then was in the properties of the Ungrispach. During the Gradiscan Wars between the Serenissima and the Habsburgs (1615-1617), San Floriano was conquered by the Venetians who also found "three hundred barrels of exquisite wine" in the cellars of the castle. The war of 1915-18 brought irreparable damage to the castle, especially towards the south and south-west side where only some traces of the ancient external walls remain, still visible.
The complex consists of a central building, once the feudal lord's dwelling, smaller dwellings and the church, surrounded by crenellated walls interrupted by massive towers. During the First World War the manor suffered irreparable damage especially in the southern slopes where now only some traces of the outer walls remain. On the north side are instead well preserved the castle features where you can see the two towers, the door and a stretch of walls with loopholes. On the ground floor, now used as a suggestive location, once the cellars were located.
The Castle has large rooms to offer itself as a wedding venue: the first on the ground floor with a large period fireplace and exposed walls is a rustic setting; the second on the first floor is the "Sala dell'Arazzo", more elegant and also equipped with air conditioning. Also on the main floor there is the library, among the most characteristic spaces of the building, an ideal place to arrange the favors waiting for guests.
Impressive rooms remained unchanged over time with exposed beams, terracotta floors, old paintings, fireplaces in every room and the seventeenth-century tapestry. To encircle Castello Formentini a magnificent park of seven thousand square meters, where you can enjoy an aperitif enjoying the spectacular view over the Collio, with a landscape that ranges from the Carnic Alps to the Adriatic Sea.
Each event is planned and managed tailored, using the best catering services, with tables prepared with silver cutlery type Versailles, crystal glasses and silver candelabra, all to recreate a frame of the past and make a day unforgettable.
Foresteria Castello Formentini
The Foresteria del Castello Formentini is located in two seventeenth-century houses within the ancient village of San Floriano, in ancient times these two houses were part of the old walls that dated back to the early fourteenth century. The Foresteria is entirely furnished with antique furniture ranging from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century, each room is named with a name of a wine typical of the Collio Goriziano. A particularity is the wine fountain where you can make the precious nectar pour out ... a truly remarkable attraction. The two houses were restored in 1985 by the famous architect Conte Paolo Caccia Dominioni.
