Grand Hotel Gardone History
The elegant Grand Hotel Gardone, dating back to 1884, is the witness of an era dominated by style: located along the main street of Gardone Riviera, a few steps from the lake, stands majestically on Lake Garda.
Its history began in 1875 when the Austrian Luigi Wimmer settled in Gardone Rivera, attracted by the beauty of the landscape and the sweet microclimate; decided to build a small hotel by the lake to share with others the opportunity to experience the magical suggestions of the place, thus giving way to the transformation of Gardone from a small rural village to winter climatic station famous throughout Europe. After some enlargements that took place at the end of the 19th century, the Hotel became a destination for intellectuals, nobles and the whole of the beautiful Central European world. In 1902, the German writer and Nobel Prize winner Paul Heyse will stay there (as well as some short stories); during the winter season, crowned princes and heads are reunited here like King George of Saxony, and the party hall becomes the scene of feasts and memorable fairy tales; in 1921 Vate Gabriele D'Annunzio stayed there waiting for the near Vittoriale to be completed and with him noblewomen, artists, writers and intellectuals; after World War II, the Grand Hotel became a favorite destination also for Winston Churcill, marking with its presence the restart of tourism after the difficult years of the conflict.
