Among the green Umbrian hills stands the timeless figure of the Badia di Orvieto, in the past abbey and today a 4-star hotel with a unique charm.
Its history has ancient origins and as its legend recounts, its construction, also reported in documents housed in the archive of the Cathedral of Orvieto, would have arisen by the will of a Lombard noblewoman called Rotruda on the place where the wagon on which they were transported stopped. the remains of Saints Severus and Martyrdom at the end of the 6th century. The abbey was rebuilt in the twelfth century by the Countess Matilde di Canossa who built the imposing dodecanogal bell tower, 28 meters high, which became the symbol of the entire structure and a true prototype of the local architecture.
For over 100 years the Abbey is owned by the Counts Fiumi di Sterpeto, a direct Umbrian family descended from Santa Chiara d'Assisi, and since the first years of their management the whole complex has started a new life: in addition to careful renovations were carried out work to adapt different spaces of the structure, creating a structure dedicated to accommodation and a restaurant of excellence, just as once, when the Abbey from place of worship and work, became a residence for cardinals and popes.
