Located in the province of Terni, on the outskirts of Orvieto, Hotel Villa Ciconia is an elegant sixteenth century villa surrounded by a beautiful park of century-old trees. Villa Ciconia History
Villa Ciconia is located at the foot of the cliff of Orvieto, surrounded by a park of about two hectares with ancient trees. Arisen from the enlargement of an ancient tower, called the Turchinetta, owned by the Marquis Giovanni Rinaldo Monaldeschi della Cervara, lover of Queen Catherine of Sweden, the villa enlarged during the 16th century by the then owner Vincenzo Butius up to the present day appearance.
A careful renovation has in fact maintained its original appearance: the dwelling is today in visible pebble and tuff, dominated by two turrets crowned with terracotta tiles. A sober and almost rigorous whole, which does not allow one to imagine the rich interior decorations. The first floor is sometimes cross-vaulted, while the main floor has carved wooden coffered ceilings and paintings, allegorical motifs and landscape scenes that develop along the walls in large frescoed bands.
The hotel consists of double rooms with essential furnishings: antiques, four-poster beds in wrought iron with simple lines, wooden beams and large stone fireplaces. All rooms overlook the Italian park but only some have a hydromassage bath or shower. There are two restaurant lounges, also suitable for banquets. The specialties of the Umbrian cuisine dominate the other gastronomic proposals: among the first courses are recommended tagliatelle with truffles or porcini mushrooms, among the main courses of local grilled or roasted meat. Wines, oil and cheese come from trusted local producers.
