Hotel Schloss Leonstain History
A unique castle, romantic inner courtyards that invite you to spend pleasant moments, a villa with a separate garden in the castle garden, as well as the most exclusive and relaxing access to Lake Wörthersee. All this is synonymous with a dream vacation at the Hotel Schloss Leonstain located right in the city center of Pörtschach am Wörthersee.
The history of the 4-star Hotel Schloss Leonstain, one of the most historic buildings on the Wörthersee, also tells how, even remotely in the past, a number of famous people appreciated Carinthian style hospitality and the unique cuisine of Schloss Leonstain.
In the second half of the 12th century, Dietrich von Projern built Burg Leonstain on a rocky plateau in Pörtschach, now known as "Leonstain Ruins". The heraldic animal used at that time - a lion that climbed over a mountain ridge - gave its name to the fortress, and to the current coat of arms of the Hotel Schloss Leonstain.
Around 1492, an era marked by peace in the region, the Peuschers, lords of the castle, decided to build a noble estate near the lake, with scrupulous attention to every detail. Sometimes inhabited by dukes, sometimes by monks, but also by country gentlemen over the centuries, in 1825 the castle was engulfed in flames and almost destroyed. After being completely rebuilt, the second part of the eventful history of the castle began.
One of the most important visitors to date was Johannes Brahms. The composer arrived in the small fishing village of Carinthia in June 1877. A bust of this extraordinary musician still remains today in the inner courtyard of the castle hotel, reminding us of one of his most creative periods.
The Schloss Leonstain hotel has been owned by the Neuscheller family since 1910, after having renovated, enlarged and stylishly decorated the estate, turning it into one of the most attractive addresses on the Wörthersee. Since the 1950s, the privacy and tranquility that await inside its robust castle gates have attracted guests from all over the world in search of rest and relaxation, including celebrities, artists and politicians.
Both Ingrid Bergmann, Manfred Wörner, Albano Carrisi, Heiner Lauterbach, Felix Baumgartner and many others - today's Schlosshotel Leonstain cultivates the lightness of being.
The 32 rooms and suites of this 4-star hotel, some of which have been kept in Biedermeier or country style, have been designed with the intention of offering comfort, warmth and an elegant environment. With its award-winning Restaurant LEON, the romantic inner courtyard and the excellently trained service staff, the castle is also perfectly equipped to host weddings along with a series of important events such as meetings and conferences.
